This excellent event was kindly hosted by the ISTD (International Society of Typographic Designers), in association with The Helvetic Centre as an introduction to the Stammtisch (regular get-together) events. The presence of The Most Beautiful Swiss Books 2009 on tour set the tone nicely and focused everyones minds on the subject at hand.
Given on-going discussions and debates regarding the role, life and soul of the physical book in light of developments and progress upon digtial platforms, the 150 strong audience of practitioners, students and enthusiasts alike suggest this format still maintains a firm hold and a certain place amongst us - for the time being at the very least.
The informal ramblings of those invited to speak exposed a clear and un-interrupted appreciation for the book form (Fraser Muggeridge), it's production (Justin Hobson, Gary Bird), longetivity (Caroline Roberts), character (Hana Tanimura) and content (Ken Hollings). Taking us through a book close to many-a-designer, Printed Matter by Karel Martens, Gilmar Wendt shared an insight this publication revealed to him –
This thought along with many more, which I could spend a lifetime discussing sent us home with our heads spinning and hands firmly wrapped around the books in our hands. . .
